Kerala Police has issued a fresh advisory alerting citizens to a new type of online scam targeting users under the guise of online gaming. Fraudsters are using WhatsApp groups to allure victims into participating in online games, before sending them a link to a gaming website.

On clicking the link, users are presented with a “gift box” offering items such as golden rings and diamond necklaces at discounted prices. Once the victim makes a payment for these items, the scammers convince them to sell these products for a higher price on the same platform.

The fraudsters also use fabricated profit calculations to lure users into purchasing expensive products, often worth lakhs. However, when victims attempt to sell these items for a profit, they find no buyers. It is only when they realise they cannot recover their money that they understand they have bee

n scammed.

What do scammers demand from victims?
When victims seek refunds, the scammers demand a large “security deposit” in order to retrieve their funds. This demand often leads victims further into the scam, with no possibility of recovering their money.

How can people protect themselves?
To avoid falling victim to such scams, individuals should exercise vigilance and caution when engaging in online gaming or shopping. The police advise staying cautious of any offers that seem too good to be true.

In case of financial fraud, victims are urged to report the incident within the “golden hour” by calling 1930 to inform the cyber police. Early reporting significantly increases the chances of recovering lost funds. Complaints can also be filed online at www.cybercrime.gov.in.
